Campton sign off Bedfordshire League campaign in style on Saturday
The 2007/8 Premier Division season drew to a close at the weekend with champions Campton rounding off with a 2-1 win at Meltis Corinthians.
And it was Daniel Webb who bagged his first goal of the campaign in the closing minute to prevent the hosts taking a share of the spoils after Aaron Hazelwood's strike had been cancelled out by Stephen Gaye.
Meltis came off the pitch thinking they had blown their chances of finishing third only to discover that a goal from Matty Smith had taken AFC Kempston Town to a 1-0 win over Blunham which kept The Sweetboys in the 'bronze medal' spot.
Runners-up Oakley Sports finished the season on a high with a 7-2 victory over Sharnbrook. Jamie McLennan and John Hislop each scored two alongside strikes from Owen Rush, Jamie Endersby and Dave Baxter, the brace in reply from Shaun Barnett.
For Sandy it was a fifth placed finish on goal-difference behind non-playing Ickwell & Old Warden. Sandy ended a run of nine games without a win with a 1-0 victory over Woburn thanks to a David Lenton penalty. It meant The Safari Boys finished bottom after Wilshamstead's 3-0 win against Riseley Sports ended a 17 game losing run, their goals from David Benson (two) and Michael Jones.
The day' final game in the top flight saw Westoning Recreation Club beat Renhold United 6-1, Robbie Faulkner netting a hat-trick, Eric Van Der Ven two and Ollie Summers one, United's reply from Sam Maddix.
In Division One, second-placed Henlow lost 2-1 on the last day against local rivals Campton Reserves.
Craig Smith and Ollie Morgan landed the vital blows with Andy Newton on the scoresheet for the host who witnessed penalty misses by Pete Saunders and Guiseppe Follano!
Dunton were held to a 2-2 draw by Kempston, Tom McGhee and Lee Threadgold the home marksmen to replies from Daniel Burraway and a Tom Buck penalty.
The final game in this section saw Marston Social win 5-3 against Sandy Reserves. Simon Steele (three), Daniel Goddard and Dan Parkes were the Social's marksmen while Sandy's replies came from Chris Hartwell, Bradley Head and Mark Jennings.
In Division Two, Bedford College were crowned champions after a runaway 7-2 win over Marston Shelton Rovers. Sammy Guri hit the net four times, Eric Okoth twice and Martin Ivy once while Rovers' replies came from Aaron Franks and Jim Burraway.
Meltis Albion took runners-up spot following a 6-0 stroll over Blunham Reserves. Scott Alleyne netting twice to take his season's tally to 50 goals and was supported Darren Ashpole (two), Michael Butler and Tom Hughes.
In the day's other two games in this division, it was the visitors who came out on top. A goal from Alex Burrows was enough to save Lidlington United Sports from a 4-1 defeat against Meppershall Jurassic while two goals from Shazed Satter and another from Jaminder Bhangle took Saffron to a 3-1 win at Oakley Sports Res.
Division Three action brought plenty of goals in the four games played, eight of those coming in the 'wooden spoon' contest at Hurst Grove where Lidlington United Sports Reserves beat Exel United 5-3.
Robert Cacchio bagged a hat-trick while Neil Rogers and Daniel Newby scored one each for United Sports with Jeremy Aceto also scoring a hat-trick for the wooden spooners!
That goal tally was bettered at Stondon where AFC Shillington were beaten 5-4 by Caldecote 'A'. Stuart Finding and Leeroy Odd both netted two apiece with Bryan Ambrose getting the other for Caldecote with the home scorers being Sam Larsen (two), Paul Andrews and Jordan Robbins.
Meanwhile Marabese Ceramics were 4-1 winners against Meltis Corinthians Reserves and they swapped fourth and fifth places in the final table. Dominic Policella netting twice for The Tilemen along with Michael Darnell and Colin Stanley while The Sweetboys' reply came from Martisse Clark.
The day's final game saw Marsh Leys and Sandy 'A' share the spoils in a 2-2 draw, Liam Parker being on the mark twice for The Leys with replies from Dan Threadgold and Ian Hammitt for Sandy.
