Packed Weatherley Centre see 11 cracking bouts
Sandy & District Amateur Boxing Club held its annual evening show at Biggleswade's Weatherley Centre on Friday when it attracted contestants from as far afield as Lancashire.

The club also had tremendous success in the ring with several winners in the 11 bout programme.

In the opening debut for bout for both youngsters, Sandy's Hayden Wall faced Stevenage's S Egan and using his jab well, he won the first round before running out of steam. However he seemed to get a second wind but his opponent took a points win.

Jess Smith was next up when he faced B Eastwood of the Grange Boxing Club and with both lads going for it hammer and tongs, Jess finally managed to throw some good combination punches but the visitor was again declared the winner.

Bout three proved to be the turning point for with Billy Hampton facing Billy McDonagh from Hayes, the Sandy youngster won all three rounds and displayed some cracking counter-punching in his unanimous points victory.

Jack Gaylor was next up and he took a deserved win against Droitwich boxer J Turner who came under tremendous pressure in all three rounds thanks to a series of stinging jabs and great combination punches by the Sandy lad.

Robert Dunne face Earl Shilton opponent Ethan Pick and it was the visitor who took the win after having shown more aggression despite Rob's good counter-punching.

Bout six saw L Dunne facing Iceni BC's M Gilbert who suffered some good jabs to the head and body yet the judges awarded him the verdict much to the disappointment of the large audience.

Ashley Rees had a rematch with Leicestershire's T Fenn from the Earl Shilton club and after a cracking seventh bout, it was Fenn who took the majority decision.

Steve Long boxed D Brevilly from Hockwell Ring who being somewhat taller – he was 6ft 2in – Long worked hard but was again unlucky to come off second best although his performance was good enough to see him named as Sandy's best boxer of the night.

Arthur Smith had the daunting task of facing double national champion Terry Holmes from Stevenage and after a cracking bout in which both boxers traded blows, the judges awarded the fight to the visitor although they also deemed it the best contest of the entire show!

There was an extra bout between Marston BC's D Kular and C Bellotti from the South Oxhey club who took the win ahead of the final senior contest between Sandy's Richard Harris and M Simmons representing the Earl Shilton club.

As expected this was a very skillful contest with great combinations thrown by both boxers.

And while Harris appeared to be waltzing it on points, he suddenly walked into a sucker punch and the bout had to be stopped in Simmons' favour in the third round.

With Steve Long named the best Sandy boxer and Arthur Smith picking up the award for the best bout, Mick Whittle was awarded a life-president status for all his hard work at the club over the years.
