Cup holders lose in Tuesday's semi-final
Biggleswade's all rounder Jay Szwajbak was the undoubted hero as the Town brushed past trophy holders Ickwell at Fairfield on Tuesday night to reach their third Hospital Cup Final in four years and their second cup final of the season.
Szwajbak made an unbeaten 63 off just 36 balls and also took 1-26 from his four overs as his side earned a place in next Tuesday's final at Bedford Modern School with former champions Westfield or Queens Park who recently knocked out St Neots.
Batting first Ickwell made 116-4, their innings dominated by South African Jon Cole-Edwardes whose 75 runs came off 51 balls, Dave Robertson being the only other batsman to make double figures in their depleted line-up.
In reply Biggleswade were 49-5 following ten of their 16 overs and still needed 68 to win off 36 balls. They then lost three more wickets and were 90-8 at end of 14th over.
But with two overs left and still requiring 27 runs to win, Matt Twigg faced just one ball while the impessive Szwajbak faced the remainder.
There was an aggressive running of twos while Szwajbak hit a Ross Fensome no-ball – the third ball of final over – for six and the Town somehow managed to take the win with just one ball to spare.
Tomorrow (Thursday) Biggleswade Town are hoping to lift the Herotage Cup when they play Ampthill Town in the final at The Hollow, Potton. The match is due to start at 6pm.
