Meeting tonight to resolve dispute over 'halfway houses'
Sandy Town Council will host a meeting tonight in an attempt to solve a dispute over 'halfway houses' in the town.

Last month angry residents crammed into a council meeting claiming that an increase in supported accommodation – used to house and rehabilitate homeless people – has resulted in a spate of anti-social behaviour in the town.

And ever since concerns were raised, the council has been working to bring the relevant organisations together so that the issue can be properly investigated.

Sandy Town Council's clerk Sue Foster said: "Residents of the Friars Walk, Sandon Close area of Sandy have approached the town council about issues they have been facing with regard to single homeless accommodation in the area.

"The council has agreed to host a meeting on May 7 to discuss the situation and representatives of Bedford Housing Link, Aldwyck Housing, the police and town, district and county councillors will be attending."

At the previous council meeting residents complained of burglaries and intimidating behaviour from the people living in the supported accommodation, as well as suggesting that police 'don't react' when a crime is reported.

Sue Foster added: "Obviously these people have to live somewhere, but the real issue appears to be about the density of the supported accommodation in Sandy.

"Hopefully the meeting will be well attended and we can reassure the Sandy residents that live in this area."
