Watch our footage of the incident that led to Craig Taberer's conviction for GBH and let us know what you think

Today the Biggleswade Chronicle gives its army of readers the chance to have their say on a controversial court case.

Three weeks ago, 20-year-old Craig Taberer, of Kitelands Road, Biggleswade, was convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on a policeman, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and perverting the course of justice because he burnt his clothes following the incident.

He is due to be sentenced at Luton Crown Court this Friday (August 1), where the judge in the case has already told him he can expect a long prison term.

Family and friends will be staging a vigil outside the court wearing Free Craig Taberer T-shirts. A website has also been set up on networking site Facebook for friends to pledge messages of support.

Craig Taberer's family say CCTV images of the incident provide clear evidence that burly off duty policeman John Watson had been spoiling for a fight with him, a 16-year-old girl and another teenage boy.

They say Craig, an apprentice carpenter, was forced into a position where he had no choice but to strike Mr Watson over the head with a skateboard.

You can now decide for yourself as the Biggleswade Chronicle has obtained the CCTV footage of the incident, which happened on June 15, 2006. Click on the play button above right to see the footage.

It shows Mr Watson, sporting a skinhead haircut and tattoos, and wearing an England football shirt and jeans, finger pointing and gesturing aggressively towards Craig, who was 18 at the time, seven-stone Collette Welham, who was 16, and Bradley Saunders, who was 19.

When Mr Watson squares up to Miss Welham, Craig Taberer reacts. He is seen grabbing a skateboard from another young boy who had stopped to watch the commotion and strikes the officer over the head with it.

Both go the ground and there follows a brief attack on Mr Watson by all three as they deliver a flurry of kicks and punches, which they said in court was to keep him on the floor.

As a result of Craig Taberer's split-second decision he is now locked up in the category A wing of Woodhill Prison in Milton Keynes.

Collette Welham, who is now 18 and from Exeter Close, Biggleswade, and Bradley Saunders, 21, of Hereford Grove in the town, were both found guilty of assaulting the officer occasioning him actual bodily harm at the end of a second trial.

They have been allowed bail, but are expecting custodial sentences as well.

Craig's father Wayne Taberer, 42, a plumber from Stevenage, said: "My son had to make a split second decision that night - you can see that on the CCTV footage.

"All he knew was that a muscular, aggressive skinhead in an England shirt, who was shouting and swearing at them all, appeared to be ready to strike Collette.

"That's why he did what he did. My son and Bradley had been trying to protect a 16-year-old girl from a 41-year-old skinhead who had been drinking.

"They were trying to calm the situation, but he was having none of it. He had lost it completely by then."

He added: "Craig did what he had to do. He honestly thought in that split second that this man, who was behaving like a complete thug, was about to attack a slip of a girl.

"My son has told me 'Dad, I had to do something - he threatened to kill us'.

"He's not a bad lad, none of those kids are, but to send Craig to prison for years, which is what is going to happen on August 1, is totally wrong and it's not justice."

"When you see the CCTV footage and the way Watson was behaving he was clearly out for trouble - spoiling for a fight.

"He never once took out his warrant card or revealed he was a police officer which, let's face it, if he had done that it would have nipped the whole thing in the bud.

"You would never have guessed in a million years from the CCTV footage that this man is a serving policeman with 18 years' experience."

Wayne Taberer is calling on senior officers in British Transport Police to look closely at Mr Watson's behaviour that night and plans to write to them. "This officer should resign," he said.

"I just want this officer to come clean and apologise for his behaviour that night. I want him to say 'I was out of order that night and that these youngsters should be released.

"My son is on a category A wing with convicted murderers, armed robbers, sex attackers and paedophiles. Is that right, I ask?"

British Transport Police have said today that the officer, John Watson, went through a misconduct hearing in July in relation to his behaviour during the incident.
A spokesman said it will conclude in August.

  • Do you think Craig Taberer has been unfairly treated by the British justice system?

  • Was his attack on John Watson a legitimate attempt to prevent any harm coming to his friends in the face of provocation?

  • Or was it a huge over-reaction considering no physical assault had been committed by John Watson?

Regardless of how the officer appears to be waving his arms around gesticulating the fact remains he was attacked with a weapon and then set upon being kicked and struck while on the ground by three people. There can be no excuse for this. Craig Taberer had the choice to walk away or call the police instead he struck out, I for one have no sympathy he deserves everything the court hands out.

I dont understand how the lad can be charged with assualting a police officer when 1.The officer was off duty 2. He was not in uniform 3. He can clearly be seen behaving in a way that one would never expect from a police officer. Aged 41, he should have the maturity to either walk away or if the youths were breaking the law, to call colleagues from the Bedfordshire force. While it is unforgivable to assault someone, it was clear that the group were being provoked by an apparent member of the public who looked like he was about to harm a female. While Craig should be punished for striking out, the courts appear to have gone overboard with the level of punishment.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the case, this is incompetent journalism on a grand scale. Your front page story doesn't even name the station where the event occurred, and the report as a whole is totally one-sided and biased. You are clearly urging your readers to watch the footage with the preconceptions that your own slanted interpretation of that footage will have created. Where is the evidence from the other side of the case? What happened to fair and objective reporting, or is that too much to hope for?

why hasn`t the policeman got a punishment? after all he was the one who but into their convo on the train and also has had previous convitions! and therefore he should not be a policeman no more,i think it is so wrong how he got nothing when he was being a thug all in her face just because he a policeman he dosen`t get those rights. why has it taken so long for this case to be delt with collette was only 16 at the time therefore why dose it take 2 whole years ? but craig went bit over the top with skate board and then try to hide the evendence but still shouldn`t be 4 years.

I am appalled at this sentance, the kids went overboard in defendng themselves and deserve to be punished however not to this degree. The actions of the policeman John Watson are not those of a man trying to keep the peace but those of a drunken thug provoking a reaction. Im not supprised that Craig thought he should defend Collette. The fact that Mr Watson also described the incident completely differently in court to what obviously happened in the CCTV recording surely proves that his recounting of the incident is anything but honest. A split second decision by a young lad, that in hindsight was over the top should not be punished in such an extreme way.

I have to disagree with John Skelding remarks about the journalism as he obviously didn't read the story "Policeman tells of vicious attack". When you reported on Mr Watson evidence.

The fact that the original jury in the first trial could not reach a verdict, shows how complicated this case is. Neither party is innocent, however I believe that Craig thought he was protecting Collette, this looks to be an act of defence of another person rather than a vicous assault on a peace loving off duty policeman. I'm not even going to discuss his previous three arrests for breach of the peace, one in which his wife recieved bruising to the face.

I am absolutely disgusted at the sentence Craig Taberer has been given. You can clearly see from the CCTV footage that Craig does not know what to do to stop this thug from harrassing Collette. If he would have called the Police, would they have done anything? After all it is very obvious that the Police only look out for their own, otherwise this man would have been doing his job and protecting teenagers from situations like this, not causing them. I hope Mr Watson has trouble sleeping at night after his behaviour, and hope he's proud of himself for ruining the lives of 3 young people.
I wish Craig and his family all the luck for the future, and look forward to seeing Craig and buying him a drink when he is released.

In this so called reporting why does it fail to state that the officer was sitting on the train minding his own business when one of the youths involved was verbally abusing the young girl to the point where he was worried for her safety so he asked the youth to leave her alone and asked the girl if she was ok? Does that sound like the actions of a man about to attack a young girl?
On doing this the youth as well as the girl turned upon him.
The use of the words 'muscular, skin head, tattoooed, england shirt' have no relevance what so ever and is stereotypical to the extreme. It doesn't either actually describe his appearance anyway!!
If these youths really did do as they say and hit him to help the girl get away why was one punch not enough? Why continous kicking, beating by all of them to within an inch of his life? And if the girl was that scared why was she the last one to carry on putting the boot in? I'm presuming after their actions to 'free the girl' they contacted the police immediately for help? No they went and burnt their clothes!
This country needs to wake up and look at the actions of youths and the part the parent plays in it. This young girl shouldn't have even been on a train that late at 16. I am a mother of three and if my son did this I would be disgusted.
Has anyone bothered to think about this officers family and children?
Do you know one of the youths has been heard bragging about this around town!!
Give up and fight a more worthwhile.
