New project hopes to show range of films at Chicksands

Film fans have taken on a new project to bring the pictures to Priory House in Chicksands.

The team of three has taken on the Pictures @ Priory House initiative, previously run by Mid Beds District Council, and is hoping to bring a range of cinematic treats to the community.

Its first film, No Country For Old Men, is set to be shown on October 14.

Hilary Western, youth and community arts worker, explained: "We actually did run a season of films last year and we got reasonable attendance, but it didn't seem to belong to anyone.

"I thought perhaps if we offered the space but let other interested people organise it, and run it themselves, it would be more grassroots and belong to the community rather than to us."

Michael Comerford, 23, who lives in Meppershall, is one of the three volunteers who will be organising the project.

He told the Chronicle: "I've just come back from university where I have been for five years and I've been looking for volunteering projects to get involved with. I used to help run the film society at university.

"We're going with a wide selection of films. We're going for quality, but with different themes. The second film we've got is a foreign language film.

"It's a mix of things that won't necessarily be on at the cinema still, or won't ever make it to the cinema in Stevenage or Bedford."

A Pictures @ The Priory Facebook group has been set up, with a website due to follow soon.
