Ickwell May Queen to be crowned on Monday
Traditional maypole dancing can be seen this Bank Holiday Monday when the Ickwell May Queen will be crowned.

Rosie Sallis, 13, of Queens Close in Northill, pictured, has been voted this year's May Queen and will take the crown from Amy Cox and join other dancers around the maypole on Ickwell Green.

Rosie said: "I was really surprised that I won. This is the first time I have entered and I couldn't believe I was picked. I was very pleased though.

"I have been doing maypole dancing since I was little and when I changed schools I was given the chance to carry it on so I did."

Rosie, a pupil at Alban Middle School in Great Barford, added: "I am a little nervous about the day but quite excited at the same time, it will be something a bit different."

A procession will kick off at The Crown pub in Northill at 1.30pm and will then make its way to Ickwell Green, where an arena will be set up to begin the dancing.

Then Rosie will dance around the maypole along with village dancers, folk dancers, Old Scholars Maypole Dancers, and the Hartsease St Neots Sweeps and Milk Maids.

Organising committee member Louisa Rix said: "We are just hoping the weather is going to be a bit better than last year but hopefully it should be a great day.

"As well as the dancers we are going to have local stalls up, and postcards for sale as souvenirs of the day.

"And the youngsters dancing will have the chance to create mayday decorations with greenery in them and they will be judged in the pub."

50p is being charged for spectators in the arena and donations will be gratefully received.
