Pictures from events across a fun-packed weekend
A weekend long party in Potton proved to be a smash-hit success as residents turned out for the summer spectacular.

The fun-packed event saw the town take part in a host of activities from a night at the movies themed music event and Potton Olympics to a dog show and skating competition.

A carnival parade brought the streets to life on Saturday, while daredevils raced one another in the exciting soapbox derby on Monday.

Lisa Howard, chairman of the Party On Potton committee, said: "It was absolutely fantastic. Party on Potton 2008 was the best ever, the people of Potton still know how to party and what was very encouraging was that the youth of Potton were involved every day and night.

"We're just really pleased that they were involved this year, because they'll be the committee of the future."

She added: "The people of Potton never cease to amaze us, not only with their support in buying tickets and turning up, but helping with the mundane things. They're just there whenever we call out 'help we need someone'.

A sculpture by local metalworker Paul Pibworth was also unveiled during the weekend's celebrations.

The Spread Your Wings sculpture, depicting a swallow in flight, was inspired by a song by rock band Queen.

Paul said: "I've been working on it for over a year since I conceived of the idea, so it's really nice to see it out there and see people looking at it, touching it and talking about it."

The piece has lyrics from the song inscribed on it, and Paul is hoping people will take the time to discover them and be inspired.

But there was one black spot on the event – with a megaphone being stolen at the BMX competition.

Organiser Ken Lynch said: "The BMX event at Potton was a great success, with more than 25 people entering.

"However, there was a very unfortunate incident at the end of the day when a megaphone was stolen. I am very disappointed because it is no good to anyone and cost us £150.

"The incident has been reported to the police but I would ask that whoever stole the megaphone returns it ASAP. Unfortunately there can be no more competitions until we get the megaphone back."
