Final chance to save a town’s green belt?
WE must save our green belt for the future, town councillors have stressed.
This follows Central Bedfordshire Council’s refusal of an application for outline planning permission to build a health centre and sports pitches to the east of Biggleswade. The town council hopes to appeal against this decision.
Mayor Wendy Smith wants residents to understand the importance of setting aside the land for the town rather than leaving it to be snatched up for housing development.
She said: “This could be the last opportunity to stop development to the east of Biggleswade.”
By holding the permission for the land and by subsequently negotiating to buy the land for the town, the town council aims to protect the green belt at the edge of the town.
Once outline permission is secured the land could be used for any combination of sports pitches or even for extending the wildflower meadow or the allotments.
