Bee-autiful and rare

19th century bee house at Ickwell Bury

THIS is how the beautifully preserved 19th century Bee House at Ickwell Bury looks today, and it is virtually unchanged on the outside from when it was used by the Harvey family to produce honey for the estate.

Timber framed and weather boarded with a thatched gabled roof, it stands on a red brick plinth.

Inside there are shelves on which the hives would have stood. Traces of honeycomb can still be seen on the interior walls.

Each hive has its own entrance hole in the side and both gable ends have a small round hole at the apex to provide access to the bees.

Now owned by Bedford School, it is considered to be a rare example of its type.
