Boys who worked Beds
AGRICULTURAL workers line up in 1930 for a photograph taken at what used to be Filldyke Road Nursery in Meppershall. And some of them look as though they have only recently left school.
Tony Primett was able to tell Memory Lane that the nursery was owned and run by Mr Elliat (although he is unsure that this is the correct spelling as he only ever heard the name spoken).
The land where the nursery once stood has now been built on.
Shown in this version of the photo are Mr Elliat, Ken Barratt, ‘Chip’ Simons, Mr Elliat’s son and Charlie Primett, Tony’s father. For the full picture and details please see the newspaper article.
It was Charlie’s first job and he started there in 1916 when he left school at the age of 14, no doubt inspired to go into the growing business by his father Thomas who was a smallholder. It was the First World War and Charlie was still too young to be enlisted.
The nursery’s major produce was cucumbers.
Thanks go to Tony for bringing in some interesting recollections of Meppershall.
