Country dancing in Clifton
Baker's daugher recalls C of E school in the 1930's
Norah Slater of St Neots has written to Memory Lane with this charming photograph of the Clifton Church of England School Country Dancing Group, of which she was a member.
As a young girl in the 1930's, Norah, then Heathfield, lived in Clifton Road, Shefford. Her father was Frank Heathfield, the village baker.
She first attended the small school in Clifton Road from the age of three to seven, and then moved on to Clifton School, leaving at 14.
She recalled: "The Reverend La Porte Payne came and gave us scripture lessons every Monday morning.
"Every year on the first Wednesday of July the vicarage gardens were thrown open to the public.
"The photo is of some of the 12 year olds who did country dancing which they learned at the school."
Norah can name most of the girls in the picture.
In the back row from left to right are: Elsie Pyke, _, Hetty Woodward, Norah Stevens, Miss Norris (the head teacher), Dolly Long, Connie Cutler, Rene West, Miss Page (teacher), Winnifred Dudley and Eileen Pratt.

In the front row are Mollie Stacey, Laura Caster, Norah herself, josie West, Edith Savoury (who went on to marry Ted Fish), _, and Joyce Metcalfe.
Norah wonders whether any of the girls who went to the school remember their classmates.
