Pre-1914 photo of old lock gate uncovers town's past

This rare pre-1914 photo shows an old lock gate on Shefford Canal which was used to transport coal to the town for 30 to 40 years until it was closed following the advent of the railway.

The picture shows how deep the lock was and water had to rise eight or nine feet in order for barges to enter Shefford.

The lock gates were pulled down in 1960 at the same time the canal was levelled.

Thanks go to John Gudgin for sending us this unusual photo.
