A Raza good musician returns

A FORMIDABLE covers band will be helping to shape the musical landscape in Chronicle Country as the weekend gets into full swing.

The well-named Piston Groovy will be performing rock classics at The Rose pub in Biggleswade on Saturday (February 4).

The finest soul sounds will be heard at The Red Lion in Biggleswade on Sunday (February 5), meanwhile, when The Soul Man pays a visit.

Barry White, Luther Vandross, George Benson, The Temptations and The Drifters are just some of the acts that this popular performer pays tribute to.

Punters can also enjoy a lively mix of covers from the 1960s to the present day at The Five Bells in Cople on Saturday, courtesy of Sheri’s Hit Men.

Potton and District Club will be the venue for a night of Burlesque entertainment on Saturday.

Five-piece contemporary and classic rock covers band Burlesque will be taking to the stage at the venue and will play hits from the likes of Blondie, Queens of The Stone Age and Pearl Jam.

Rock four-piece Mr Rainmaker will appear at The Roundabout Club in Sandy on Saturday, while covers act Tatanka will be playing at The Cornerstone in Shefford, also on Saturday.

Mr Rainmaker play favourites from acts as diverse as Madness, Stevie Wonder and The Jam.

Reggae, rock and metal can be heard in a typical Tatanka set.

There will also be a Buddy Holly tribute night at The Crown in Stotfold on Friday (February 3).

Bedford will be welcoming back one of its favourite sons when Dan Raza headlines Holy Moly’s at Esquires on Sunday.

Dan will be showcasing songs from his debut album, an acoustic roots-rock set that features a selection of illustrious names.

It’s now seven years since Dan’s then-band The Sunbirds won an Esquires battle of the bands competition.

And his first single was recorded in the area too, with the help of some Bedford names.

Since then Dan has shared a stage with the likes of Badly Drawn Boy and Chris Farlowe, toured Europe with Joan Armatrading, toured Texas with Slaid Cleaves, had one of his songs heavily played by Neil Young on his Living With War website, and recorded his debut album with the likes of Charlie Hart, BJ Cole and Steve Simpson.

Also on the bill will be Greg Harrisburg, a London-based acoustic country folkie who will be playing in support of his album Spectrology.

His influences range from Dan and Van Zandt to Dostoevsky and Keats.

And they will be joined by Quiet Loner, aka songwriter Matt Hill, whose accolades include Americana UK Album of the Year 2004 for his debut LP Secret Ruler Of The World.

His songs cover topics such as love, loss, infidelity, religion, fallen angels and the redemptive power of country music.

All three artists are powerful live performers, so this gig is one not to miss.

Doors open at 8pm and tickets cost £3 on the door.
