SOUL fans will be in for a treat on Friday (February 17) when a popular performer takes to the stage at the Biggleswade United Working Men’s Club.

The Soul Man – a regular performer on the Chronicle Country circuit – will be entertaining punters at the Church Street venue with a selection of soul and Motown classics.

Soul will also be on the agenda at the Ivy Leaf Club in Langford on Saturday (February 18) when Uche performs there.

Admission is free for members and £2 for non-members.

Classic soul, reggae and more modern favourites will also be heard in Meppershall on Friday when Sugarsoul performs at The Sugarloaf.

Punters can expect to hear classics from Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross and Mary J Blige.

Over in Potton, Hair Resistance will be rocking the Potton and District Club on Saturday with covers from the likes of Deep Purple, Queen and the Foo Fighters.

Entry is £2 for non-members.

The band will also be playing at The Red Lion in Biggleswade on Thursday night next week (February 23).

Soloists Freddy B and Brian J will be entertaining punters at The Roundabout Club in Sandy on Friday and at Sandy Conservative Club on Saturday respectively.

The Pavlovs, meanwhile will be playing rock and pop covers at The Crown in Stotfold on Saturday.

Bedford’s very own Cherry Lee Mewis is also back and this time with a smoking hot new album to launch.

The 5ft-nothing, power-house singer songwriter has grabbed the musical bull by the horns, and together with her more-than amazing band, including long time collaborator and guitarist Max Milligan, she has produced her exciting self-penned third studio album.

Heard It Here First is an 11-track-breath-of-fresh-air in a somewhat predictable blues music scene. The record takes the solid roots of Cherry’s debut album, 2007’s Little Girl Blue, and the foot-stomping vibe of her sophomore, 2009’s Southbound Train, then pushes the boundaries even further.

Drawing from only the finest musical influences and giving them her own, completely unique treatment, the record is a musical force to be reckoned with.

Ten of the 11 songs are brand new original cuts, the one cover being a version of the 1920 ragtime skiffle of Papa Charlie Jackson’s Keep It Clean, which slots in nicely among the new stonkin’ gems that make up Cherry’s third blues effort.

Cherry said: “On this album, we really went to town with it, had fun with it and poured our hearts and souls into it.

“I feel it really takes you on a journey, you can dance, you can sing-a-long, or you can chill out and reflect.

“There’s songs about good times, love, jealousy, humour and ends with a tribute to my grandad who I lost last year.

“There’s even a short instrumental where my dobro player Nick Slater beautifully chills you out before the album’s final track, a pick-me-up after the rollercoaster.”

And Cherry Lee Mewis and her band will be officially launching Heard It Here First at Danny’s Bar at Esquires on Sunday (February 19). Entry is free and the doors open at 5pm.
