REVIEW: High School Musical 3: Senior Year

The latest offering in the hugely popular movie series

The most sickening, disturbing and thoroughly nasty movie of the year… is not how I'd describe the big screen debut of the moneymaking Disney's High School Musical series.

In fact part 3, dubbed 'Senior Year', is simply more of the same bubbly, chaste, squeaking teenagers struggling with deep issues such as what to wear to the prom…

Kenny 'High School Musical' Ortega directs the predictable big budget retread, which rips bits from the first two TV movies and adds nothing much new.

So we find Wildcats basketball captain Troy (plastic heartthrob Zac Efron) trying to figure out if he should play ball at college or pursue his closet love for singing stage shows.

Meanwhile his almost sexy but utterly innocent girlfriend Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) is off to high achieving Stanford and there could be tears before graduation if this cute couple can't agree on where their destinies lie…

Get ready to cheer for the power of friendship between Troy and Chad (Corbin Bleu), and boo at the devious blonde bombshell Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and her evil plans for self-promotion.

Also spare a thought for the lovely song writing Kelsi (Olesya 'once starred in a movie called Vampire Chicks with Chainsaws' Rulin) who is the unsung heroine of the High School Movies series if you ask me, she never gets a break.

Will it all turn out alright in the end? Or will the entire cast die horribly at the hands of a genetically mutated high school janitor? I was hoping for the second outcome but got the first…

The 'stop every few minutes for a bouncy poptastic song and dance number' format is maintained even if the only memorable track is a rehash of the 'All in this together' from the original.

But who needs a meaningful plot or anything resembling originality when you can sell and million billion soundtrack CDs, lunchboxes and poseable figures by recycling any old child friendly tat like this?

Even my sons who once professed to enjoy the first High School Musicals found this one to be 'a bit average' – which makes me a proud dad to have brought up boys who can spot second rate, over-hyped nonsense when they see it.

If machine tooled Disney marketing friendly soppiness isn't your cup of tea, maybe you might want find a quantum of solace (a small degree of comfort) by checking out the new Bond, which keeps the quality control high in all areas.
