Not for the faint-hearted - Chubby's in town

Roy Chubby Brownn set to turn Bedford blue

Not for the faint hearted, controversial comedian Roy Chubby Brown is coming.

Branded too rude for TV, the comic, famous for his trademark patchwork suit, made his name on the pubs and clubs circuit in the 70s and his often close to the bone humour just keeps on growing in popularity.

"I bring the building site to the stage and no-one has ever done that before," he said.

Indeed such is the popularity of Chubby's potty mouthed working class humour that Mark Gattis, Reece Shearsmith and Steven Pemberton, the creators of the BBC comedy The League of Gentlemen, named their fictional town Royston Vasey, Chubby's real name.

Roy even appears in an episode of the show as the no-nonsence Mayor of Royston Vasey, one of his only TV appearances, screened firmly after the watershed.

But despite this censorship, the Great British public have an appetite for the risque like never before.

The Roy Chubby Brown annual DVD release is a Christmas favourite and over the years he has sold 4.5 million recordings of his live stand-up performances.

"Comedians don't tell jokes anymore," says Chubby: "The working classes have enough to do without having to work out the end of a joke, I get people coming up after the shows saying: 'Thank god, a real comedian,'."

However Chubby's unique style of comedy has led many critics to brand him racist:

"I'm not racist I have black members of my family.

"Of course I talk about things like overcrowding and asylum, but at the end of the day it's the Government's job to sort it out.

"I'm not trying to make a political statement.

"I make jokes about everybody, blacks, whites, men and women.

"I love my job and I wouldn't swap it for the world."

Roy Chubby Brown is appearing at the Bedford Corn Exchange on Wednesday July 8.
