A charity has gained more than £25,000.

The chairman of Central Beds Council, Councillor Caroline Maudlin, has raised the money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer through charity events over the past year.

Ms Maudlin, who represents the Sandy ward, has now been elected for another year. She chose Breakthrough Breast Cancer after suffering from the disease a few years ago.

Ms Maudlin said: “I’ve loved my role as chairman as Central Beds Council so I was absolutely delighted to be re-elected for a second term of office.

“I never dreamt that together we could achieve so much – staff, local companies, residents, my own friends and family have all helped me to reach this fantastic figure, which should make a real difference to Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

“That amount is enough to fund a PhD student and everything they need to research cancer for a whole year.”

Events have included walks, a concert and bake sales, to name but a few. Ms Maudlin also represents the authority on civic visits and at ceremonial events.

Councillor David Bowater has been re-elected as vice chairman.
