Allotment holder is demanding new site

An allotment holder has expressed his anger at being removed from his site with nowhere else to go.

Stephen Nakoneczny has said that Sandy Town Council should have done more to find new allotment sites in the locality. But town mayor Susan Sutton responded that the council has been searching hard for a decade.

Earlier this month the council confirmed that allotment holders at the site in Potton Road would have to give up their tenancies in November 2013. The neighbouring cemetery will be extended on to the land.

Stephen said: “I feel Sandy Town Council has not made enough efforts to find a new site for allotment holders.

“I am told they have approached landowners but have they offered any reasonable returns to them?

“They have been keen to spend vast amounts of taxpayers’ money on new offices in Sandy recently, which I know have been shelved.

“What benefits would that give Sandy residents in the future whereas a decent allotment site would help the wellbeing of all.

“Looking around Sandy there are many vacant plots which would be ideal for a new plot.”

But Councillor Sutton said: “Sandy Town Council, going back 10 years or more, has contacted every landowner in the parish and spoken to many of them on several occasions.

“We have been extremely active and vocal in our hunt for a site. It is very discouraging that even more land has been taken from productive crops and put into paddocks and we cannot find a single landowner who is willing to sell to us.”

The land currently being used for allotments always has been officially temporary although some tenants have been working on their plots since the 1970s. The land was always intended to be an extension of the cemetery when the need arose.

Sandy Town Council is continuing its search for an allotment site. Anyone who would consider leasing or selling land to the council for allotments should call the council on 01767 681491.
