Last beam added to visitor centre
Mrs Pam Jordan with Rupert Newman .
A TOWN’S biggest employer marked the completion of the first stage of its visitor centre with a topping-out ceremony yesterday (Thursday, January 19).
The oak frame of The Jordans & Ryvita Company’s tourist building was completed at the watermill site on the outskirts of Biggleswade.
Pam Jordan and her sons Bill and David placed the final pegs in the wood and an oak branch was lifted to the top of the frame.
Jordans has concentrated on creating a sustainable, eco-friendly building. The oak frame will be covered by plywood and insulated with hemp. The Holme Mills Heritage Centre will house a cafe and a shop, while there will be a museum in the adjacent mill building. A decked area for eating and drinking will overlook the mill leat.
Raised beds for growing vegetables will help tell the story of the market gardening industry and visitors will also be able to enjoy a wildlife garden.
The centre, which will be a major Greensand Ridge tourist attraction, will be opened at Easter 2013.
