Commonwealth flags ready to raise

For the first time ever Bedfordshire’s local authorities will be raising flags to mark Commonwealth Day.

The flags have now arrived and the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen Nellis, presented them to the leader of Central Beds Council, James Jamieson, the mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson, and the mayor of Luton, Councillor Sheila Roden during a special ceremony at Central Beds Council’s headquarters in Chicksands.

Helen Nellis spoke about the history of the Commonwealth and the values in the Commonwealth Charter.

Three pupils from Stratton Upper School in Biggleswade, Beth Jones, Tobias Milligan and Alice Wright, talked about what the Commonwealth means to them.

The flags will be raised countrywide at 10am on Monday.
