ASPIRING musicians excelled in auditions for a Rotary competition.

Youngsters from Holmemead Middle School and Edward Peake Middle School in Biggleswade were among the musicians who took part in the auditions.

The preliminary round of the Rotary Young Musician competition was hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Biggleswade, Biggleswade Ivel and Sandy and saw players of a variety of instruments perform to a Rotary judge.

Each musician was asked to play a piece of their choice.

Three students from Holmemead and two from Edward Peake will now go through to the district semi final of the competition at St Ivo School in St Ives, Cambs on Sunday, February 26.

Max Gill, Jenni Houldsworth, Callum Watson and Zoe Fung are the Holmemead pupils who will compete in the next round.

They will be joined by Euan King and Shannon Wright from Edward Peake.

Cate Lawson, cross curriculum leader for creativity at Holmemead Middle said: “We had students playing all sorts of instruments in the competition, from the saxaphone and trombone to the flute and piano.

“With the judge and members of the audience watching the students performing there was always going to be a bit of pressure there but it didn’t show – they played so well.”

David Della Valle, head of music at Edward Peake Middle believes such competitions help to bring out musical talent and creativity in students.

He said: “It is always pleasing to see the children performing to an audience and we heard some very talented musicians playing. There are definitely some who have a lot of potential for the future.”

Mary Whitehead from the Rotary Club of Biggleswade Ivel. who helped to organise the auditions said: “The idea came about after musicians from the two middle schools and Stratton Upper performed for Rotarians last November.”
