Children raise hundreds to fund boreholes
YOUNGSTERS at a lower school raised more than £700 to help provide African villages with water.
The children at All Saints Lower School in Clifton brought in the money by collecting change in bottles.
The money, which was collected in just three weeks, will be used by From Stones to Water to provide boreholes.
Daphne Brown, who organises From Stones to Water, said: “I showed them my films on the work in Zimbabwe.
“They raised £740 and it was one of the best projects I’ve had in 10 years. They’ve done so well. I was really lost for words.”
Ninety-two per cent of the children returned their bottles with the donations in them and the change even came in 17 different currencies. Then on Friday (October 21) the children practised walking around the school playing field carrying buckets of water to see how life is for people in Zimbabwe.
Daphne started the project in 1999 to help villages where there is no water supply and where many women and children have to walk 5km to fetch water.
To date she has raised enough money to supply 30 boreholes and has visited several of the villages in person. The water can also be used to irrigate crops, which can be sold to pay for the children’s education.
