Chinese New Year celebrations for Clifton pupils

THE spirit of Chinese New Year was alive and well at a lower school as pupils enjoyed a week of activities.

Children at All Saints Lower School in Clifton spent five days marking the occasion last week.

Arts and crafts played a major role in the celebrations, as youngsters were given the chance to make a range of different items.

Chinese lanterns, origami cards, Chinese hats and door hangers were among the children’s creations.

They also made tangram puzzles and coloured in dragons.

Pupils also had the chance to try Chinese food and a special spread of dishes was also served on the Thursday (January 26) for all of the chidren who wanted a school meal.

The week concluded with a visit to the school by the Don Rae Academy of Movement and Arts (DRAMA) on Friday (January 27).

Staff from DRAMA taught pupils traditional Chinese ribbon dancing routines and brought along special heads and masks that the children could try on.

Justine McCarthy, business manager at the school said: “The children loved taking part in the celebrations and really entered into the spirit of the week.

“The Don Rae Academy also put on a fantastic show and some of the dance routines and costumes were quite spectacular.

“They have visited before and put on a Bollywood workshop so we knew it would be a success.”
