An upper school should soon have an extra 400 places for students.
On Monday (March 18) members of Central Beds Council’s executive committee voted to increase Stratton Upper School in Biggleswade’s capacity from 1,250 places to 1,650 places.
This is part of the council’s New School Places Programme, which will ensure that every child has a place at a local school.
Councillors also agreed to the expansion of Redborne Upper School and Alameda Middle School in Ampthill, Church End Lower School in Marston and Vandyke Upper School in Leighton Buzzard.
Councillor Mark Versallion, executive member for children’s services, said:
“Our New School Places Programme is a hugely important piece of work for us and we estimate that we’ll spend over £100m in the next five years on implementing it.”
Parents and other interested parties will be consulted about Stratton’s expansion.
The Secretary of State for Education will also have to give his approval.
In August the council’s executive committee will make a final decision subject to planning applications.
If approved, the extra places will be available for September 2014.
