Success was all talk!
CONFIDENT public speakers will compete in the next round of a competition after impressing judges at the semi-finals.
Etonbury Academy students Will Hazelwood, Luc Trampenau and Steven Thompson will now compete in the district finals of the Rotary Youth Speaks contest on Wednesday, February 29.
The three from the Arlesey academy competed against teams from three other schools and finished second, securing a place in the next round.
They will now take on other finalists in the district finals at Kimbolton School in Huntingdon.
Will, Luc and Steven took part in the semi-finals on Wednesday, January 18 after winning the first round at the Stotfold Road academy in December.
They also gave the same speech at the semi-finals, which were held at Rushden Community College. The three spoke about celebrities and whether the media is allowed too much freedom in reporting events in their private lives.
Etonbury English teacher Ema Makower, who helped the students to prepare said: “The boys worked very hard and prepared really well for the competition.
“Before the last round they did leave everything to the last minute a bit but this time they were practising every day.”
The team’s confidence also helped to win over the judging panel, Ms Makower said.
She added: “We were really impressed – the staff were getting quite nervous about the whole thing but the boys were very cool and calm about it all.”
The first round of the competition saw Will, Luc and Steven competing against teams from Holmemead Middle School and Edward Peake Middle School in Biggleswade.
It was organised and hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Biggleswade and Biggleswade Ivel.
