12-076 Drumming workshop with Jeff Rich former Status Quo drummer at Holmemead Middle School.

A SCHOOL’S music workshop went with a bang – when a rock star turned up to host it.

Former Status Quo drummer Jeff Rich was the tutor for the day at Holmemead Middle School on Tuesday (January 24).

Jeff – who performed and toured with the legendary rock band for more than 15 years – gave youngsters a masterclass in how to get the most out of drumming.

He brought along a drum kit and a variety of cymbals and other similar instruments for youngsters to use.

The whole school took part in the workshop and all 470 students were split up into two groups for two separate sessions.

Before the music got under way Jeff, who runs the Jeff Rich Drum Masterclass programme at schools around the country, spoke at length about the history of the drum.

Cate Lawson, cross curiculum leader for creativity at the school said: “The students learned about how drumming started and how the instrument has evolved and developed over time.

“That was the theory side of things before the actual playing started!”

Jeff then let the students play the different instruments while he joined in on the drums.

Ms Lawson added: “He just had the one drum kit but he was happy for the students to have a go as well and they certainly made the most of it!

“During the workshop he focused on different kinds of music but at the start he was playing some Status Quo favourites which were familiar to most people I think.”

The workshop was arranged by Holmemead Middle headteacher Stephen Phillips who is the musical director of the City of Cambridge Brass Band.

He has many contacts in the industry and asked Jeff if he could visit the school.

It has been a bright start to the year for music at Holmemead Middle.

Earlier this month up-and-coming street band Luminites performed for youngsters.

In February new R&B star A*M*E will also be hosting a workshop at the school.
