Bedfordshire Police is issuing advice in light of Storm Doris closing a number of roads across the county.
The A6 at Pulloxhill, the A5 at Hockliffe and the A505 in Luton town centre and a number of smaller roads are currently closed after strong winds caused trees to blow over and obstruct them.
Motorists are asked to re-consider their travel plans and avoid unnecessary journeys.
Detective Superintendent Vicki Evans said: “We are experiencing an increase in calls in relation to weather related activity, but are working closely with partners to deal with disruption. We are working to deploy additional resources and thank the public for their cooperation and patience while we deal with this increase in demand. I would urge anyone travelling to consider the necessity of their journey, and would also encourage people to contact vulnerable or elderly neighbours to ensure they are ok.”
Advice from the force includes:
We are currently receiving a high volume of calls due to the weather so please only call 999 in a genuine emergency
Reconsider travel plans – is it necessary to travel?
If you do need to travel, take warm clothes and extra supplies with you in case of delays
Take extra care when driving – plan your route, leave extra time for your journey and be careful when overtaking other vehicles
Make contact with vulnerable or elderly neighbours to check on their welfare
