Gas guzzlers are goners in Central Bedfordshire

Electric car plans unveiled by council bosses at Chicksands

Electric cars are set to replace gas guzzlers in Central Beds.

Eco-friendly council bosses are planning to replace fleet cars with ultra low carbon or electric vehicles, like that built by the Electric Car Corporation (ECC) in Flitwick, which can travel up to 70 miles at a cost of just 90 pence.

Liz Wade, Central Beds Council assistant director of economic growth and regeneration, said: "We have recognised as a new authority that Central Beds has some great assets, Millbrook centre of excellence for testing electric vehicles, Cranfield University, and the ECC in Flitwick.

"We have some real challenges on cutting emissions and I was asked to give some thinking on the best way forward.

"As a council we could be an early adopter of low carbon or electric technology, but it's also about stimulating local business to take part.

"It's all here on our doorstep and this will keep jobs and local supply chains, too."
