Test your wits and raise cash for cancer unit

Last week we announced the launch of Macmillan Cancer Support’s campaign to raise money for a new cancer unit at Lister Hospital.

The charity needs you to help it raise £1.5 million in order to replace the oversubscribed facility at the Stevenage hospital. The unit is used by Chronicle readers.

The Biggleswade fundraising committee’s first event will give you a chance to test your general knowledge.

A Macmillan quiz will be held on Friday, June 7 in Biggleswade Conservative Club. This is an ideal chance for you to do your bit for the campaign while having a great night out with your friends.

The questions will roll from 7.30pm. Teams can have up to eight members.

Entry will cost £10 per person. The price includes roast chicken, chips, salad and coleslaw plus a dessert. If you would like the vegetarian option just ask when you pay.

You can also help by joining the Biggleswade fundraising committee, which is currently very short of members. For more details call Jonathan Levantine on 01767 312368.

Macmillan wants to build a £2.9 million cancer centre at the hospital. The East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust is contributing £1.4 million but this leaves £1.5 million to be raised by the public.

Each chemotherapy bay, which will have six to eight chairs in it, will cost £148,000.

The waiting room will need £250,000 to go ahead and the furniture will cost £150,000.

A quiet room for counselling will set Macmillan back another £59,000 and a prep room where the chemotherapy is prepared will cost another £33,000.

The new unit will have wi-fi so patients will be able to use email and social media on their phones and ipads, reducing their feeling of isolation.

There will be more space for family and friends to be with their loved ones when they go for treatment, again reducing isolation.
