Interchange could provide transport hub

A new interchange could provide a hub for public transport in a town.

Early planning and negotiations are currently under way for the proposed Biggleswade Transport Interchange.

Central Beds Council wants to create a new hub where buses can collect and drop off passengers next to the town’s train station.

If the plan goes ahead then the interchange with the new bus stops could be in place by the end of next year.

It will be based next to Biggleswade railway station and would see the bus companies including Station Road on their routes.

Speaking at a Biggleswade Town Council meeting on Tuesday, James Gleave, a co-ordinator for the project at Central Beds Council, said the feedback the organisation has received has been encouraging so far.

He said: “The transport interchange is an essential part of the Biggleswade Masterplan and our discussions with Network Rail and First Capital Connect have been positive so far.

“We have produced some early plans to show them.

“The bus companies are also enthusiastic.”

Land currently owned by Network Rail could be used as part of the project, Mr Gleave said.
