A new May Queen will take centre stage at a village’s annual festivities.

Katie Bryant has been chosen as the next royal leader for the traditional Ickwell May Day celebrations.

The 13-year-old and her two younger sisters have danced in every May Day event since they were five years old.

Katie, of Ickwell Road in Upper Caldecote, said: “I started when I was in Northill Lower School and now I do it by myself, at classes.

“I like the maypole dancing best with the ribbons. I always wanted to be May Queen and I’m really looking forward to the day.”

She will be joined by Jasmine Lee, who will present the garland, and Jasmine Noble, who will present the sceptre.

Ellen Reynolds, Eleanor Murray and Katrina Jones will also be attendants on the day.

Ickwell May Day takes place each year on the first May Bank Holiday, which this year falls on Monday, May 5.

This village tradition, which dates back for more than 450 years, will start with a procession from the Crown pub in Northill at 1pm.

The procession will walk to the maypole on Ickwell Green. This is followed by the crowning of the May Queen and dancing around the maypole.

Stalls will be selling local produce from jewellery and sweets to bric-a-brac to honey. There will also be sideshows and games as well as a tea room offering tea, coffee and home-made cakes to tempt you.
