A pensions provider has donated £140,000 towards the new cancer unit at Lister Hospital.
Macmillan Cancer Support is trying to raise £1.5m towards building the desperately needed new unit at the Stevenage Hospital.
Friends Life’s donation will help build the Macmillan Information Centre, which will provide cancer patients with advice about financial matters.
Kelly Wallace-Bates, the Macmillan Cancer information and support manager at Lister, said: “The current information and support centre is located in a retail space on a main thoroughfare and the lack of space makes it difficult to speak privately with people who are distressed and vulnerable.
“The new centre will have quiet rooms in which patients, family members, carers and friends can talk in private.
“Very often people who come to see us have been given bad news and often say that they’ve got no hope and nowhere to go for support. It is our job to help them and make things a little easier.”
Anyone wanting to help raise funds for the new unit can call Macmillan’s local fundraising manager, Pauline Craig, on 07834 191203.
