A royal appointment for David

A long-standing volunteer will meet the Prince of Wales after being short-listed for an award.

David Jordan, of Shefford, has been recognised for a lifetime of voluntary work by the WRVS organisation, and could be in line for a prestigious accolade.

The 81-year-old was nominated for the WRVS (formerly the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service) Diamond Champions awards.

Elderly people who have volunteered for a long period of time and who have made a difference to people’s lives can be put forward for the Diamond Champions, organised as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

David, who lives in Clifton Road, attended a function in London where nominees could speak to organisers and special guests including Patricia Routledge, who played Hyacinth Bucket in BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances.

He was then confirmed as one of 10 Diamond Champion finalists for the south and south-east region and will attend a further event at St James’s Palace in London on November 29.

This will be attended by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, who David will have the chance to speak to.

David was nominated anonymously for the awards after decades of volunteering in Shefford and elsewhere in Chronicle Country.

He has helped out at cub and scout packs in the area, volunteered with the Shefford Over 60s Coffee Morning Club and assisted neighbours with day-to-day tasks like carrying their shopping.

He also cared for his late wife Rita for almost a decade before she tragically lost her battle against cancer.

David said: “Both of my parents were Salvation Army officers so volunteering and helping others
was very much part of my upbringing.

“It’s important to look out for other people and help where you can.”

Modest David is not looking for any plaudits though.

He added: “Although I have been nominated for the Diamond Champions I am not doing this for any personal glory.

“The volunteering aspect is what is important.”
