Meet Biggleswade Carnival’s new royal family.

The Carnival Court was officially selected at a special event this week.

And the brand new Carnival Queen was named as 12-year-old Katrina Jones, who attends Edward Peake.

She will be joined by Carnival Prince Ashton Fage, six, who attends Dunton Lower and Caitlin Allen, 11, who is also a student at Edward Peake.

After being crowned Katrina said: “This year my grandmother really encouraged me to enter. She was over the moon, she was jumping up and down and everything.

“I honestly couldn’t believe it when I was chosen, I was over the moon too.”

At the selection event Katrina was asked what her hobbies were –to which she replied ‘a lot’.

She added: “I’ve been playing golf since I was four and I’ve been doing ballet, tap and modern dancing since I was around three. I also play piano and like swimming.”

Katrina was recently moved up to the junior division at John O’Gaunt golf club and just passed her latest tap dancing examination. She is taught at Dynamic Theatre Dance School in Clifton.

And she is also keen on her school lessons, listing her favourite subjects as Maths, ICT (information and communications technology) and English.

She hopes to one day enter a career using her ICT skills.

A spokesman for the carnival said: “We had a great turnout, with many entries in each category, making it a great afternoon.

“The candidates performed superbly and really made it difficult for the judges to score.

“We would like to thank all those who took part, without you the afternoon would not have been the same.”

The theme of this year’s carnival fun is films, and the events are due to start with the darts night at the Working Men’s Club on June 9.

The Whimsical Quizzical follows on June 13 at the Gardeners Arms, then it’s the ever popular Duck Race at Dan Albone Car Park on June 15.

A quiz night at the Working Men’s Club follows on June 16, then it’s eyes down for the bingo on June 17 at the Working Men’s Club. There is a crib night, also at the club, on June 19. Then it’s the day everyone has been waiting for – the grand parade of floats on June 21, when the carnival court will lead the parade through town. The Kids Disco is on June 22 , along with the grand draw. A race night follows on June 28. For full details see www. biggleswade-carnival.org
