Academy to win a new classroom?

A Chronicle Country academy could be in line for a £80,000 new classroom – if it wins a competition.

Samuel Whitbread Academy in Clifton is one of the schools vying for the opportunity to build the classroom as part of the national TES contest.

TES, the world’s largest online network of teachers opened the competition to every school in the country.

The academy is one of six schools short-listed from the 600 that entered the contest.

Entrants simply had to state in no more than 300 words why they deserve to have the new classroom – to be designed by Clearspace Buildings – built at their school.

The 1,800-student academy impressed judges with its pledge to use the classroom to make maths more engaging for youngsters and for the wider community.

Samuel Whitbread – which has an engineering specialism – wants to build a maths laboratory to give students the chance to experience and relate maths to the real world.

David Hall, advanced skills teacher at the academy said: “This is a fantastic opportunity as a maths laboratory would allow our students to continue to make great progress in understanding maths and the contribution it makes to the world around them.

“It’s amazing to think that we may soon be able to provide students with a world class ’maths lab’ that will enable them to experience maths like never before!”

Readers can vote for Samuel Whitbread online at www.tesconnect.com/building from Thursday, January 17 until Thursday, February 14.
