Allotment is springing into life

April 3, 2009

Everything is coming to life in the garden and in the allotment, the clocks have changed and even I can feel the sap rising!

Since I have been involved in an allotment, I have become aware that there is some sort of a credo among fellow 'allotmentiers', which says that you don't buy anything for the plot if it can possibly be constructed from the odd bit of wood, pieces of chicken wire or second hand pallets.

It's true that there are some people who build a beautifully constructed shed (usually painted light blue) so that they can sit outside on a summer's evening drinking white wine but they are few and far between and not entirely accepted into the brotherhood.

Our allotment site contains every kind of ramshackle shed known to man and it's quite clear that the work that goes into these constructions is far greater than if the builders had popped along to the garden centre and bought a ready-made one.

But that's not really the point of growing your own because it's all a way of life thing. It is possible that one doesn't save any money by growing vegetables and fruit but it is definite that you feel better.

I am at a stage in my life when I simply cannot do the heavy digging any more. Thankfully Mrs P has taken over that responsibility and I am left to plan, think and muse, which suits me fine.

Many moons ago, when we were first married, the garden was strictly my domain and my wife showed little or no interest in horticulture, but now things are very different.

She decides what vegetables we grow on our plot, which is fair enough really because she ends up cooking them as well.

All in all it's a 'Good Life' but I am trying to control a sudden urge to buy some chickens!
