And now, the end is near...
Chronicle deputy editor, April 17, 2009
And now, the end is near and so I face the final curtain.
Don't worry dear readers, I'm not about to shuffle off this mortal coil.
I am, however, about to shuffle wistfully away from the offices of the Biggleswade Chronicle.
Those in 'government' at our company have decided to have something of a 'cabinet reshuffle'.
It means I am moving to a different role altogether, based in our Milton Keynes office, where I will be responsible for the production of all the newspapers in our group.
It also means my day-to-day involvement with the Chronicle has come to an end, although I will still be getting my hands dirty with some of the pages.
People have been asking me if I am moving on to bigger and better things.
And while the job itself is massive, even the biggest job in the world would be hard-pressed to be better than my time in Biggleswade.
I have loved every day of my four years here. The Chronicle's offices are manned by a small and dediated tight-knit team, which in many ways is a microcosm of the very community it serves.
Everyone knows everyone and everything about each other (not always a good thing, admittedly) and I'm going to miss them, you and the district we serve massively.
There have been many, many good times, some bad times, and on occasion a little bit of controversy.
But then we wouldn't be doing our jobs properly if we didn't upset the odd person every now and again.
Of course, my departure won't change the fact that the Chronicle continues to thrive and you will get a top quality rag every Friday.
It will just mean that the office is a much quieter and much less fun place to be, if I say so myself!
And on the plus side for you, the dedicated readers, it also means you will no longer have to put up with my witless ramblings on this page.
I've said it before but I'll say it again now – being afforded the space here to direct my rants, musings and general witterings to an often bemused and unsuspecting readership has been an absolute honour and privilege.
I know I've upset, annoyed and angered some people along the way, but I also know I've entertained and amused others and to be honest that's all I ever wanted to do.
I end, as I began, with the words made famous in a little ditty sung by Old Blue Eyes.
For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels; And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows...
And did it my way!
