A top choir from down under joined pupils for a vocal workshop.

The Australian Voices visited Gamlingay Village College on Thursday, October 18 and worked with the middle school’s choir.

Headteacher Colin Pheysey said: “It was absolutely amazing. I’ve never heard anything quite like it.

“They are very talented people as you can imagine of an international singing group in the middle of a European tour.”

He explained that he visited Australia in the summer and heard of The Australian Voices. He saw that they had UK tour dates planned and contacted them to ask whether they would stop at the school.

Six of the main singers were able to visit.

The Australian Voices spent three hours at the village college. The school choir performed a surprise rendition of I Am, You Are, We Are Australian as a welcome gift.

Mr Pheysey said: “It’s like an unofficial national anthem. Three of the girls cried they were so moved by it!”

The visitors then spent two hours working with the school choristers.

Mr Pheysey added: “They put the school choir through a whole range of voice and singing exercises to improve the singing and the range of their voices.

“They even had our youngsters conducting them when they came to perform.”

Pupils from Gamlingay First School then joined the whole of the village college to hear The Australian Voices perform.

They sang a complete range and variety of pieces from Rachmaninov to The Facebook Song.

In one piece some of the male performers even imitated the sound of a didgeridoo.

The pupils had a great day and the visitors later emailed the school to say how much fun they had.

The Australian Voices were impressed at the standard of singing in the choir, which is already a beacon among school choirs in the local area.

The choir will continue to improve under its new musical director, Lyndsay Allen.
