Big freeze can't put a dampner on hampers
Struggling families in line to receive packed hampers in time for Christmas morning
Generous Chronicle readers have once again stepped forward to help ensure needy families have a happy Christmas this year.
The Chronicle's Families in Need appeal has filled a massive 64 hampers with tasty festive fare and toys for the 129 children who are set to benefit from the Christmas spirit.
Sandy and Shefford's mayors Geoff White and Paul Mackin rolled up their sleeves to help pack the hampers at the weekend – along with Chronicle editor Jim Stewart and the First Sandy Scouts.
And a team of drivers braved the ice and snow to make sure the hampers were safely delivered to families across Chronicle Country – including Sandy, Biggleswade, Potton and Shefford.
Ken Lynch, who co-ordinated the appeal, said: "The hampers were absolutely chock-a-block full. It was a great success.
"The readers were absolutely wonderful, they sent in so
much stuff it was unbelievable.
"The children will be absolutely thrilled to bits that Father Christmas came to visit them."
Mr Lynch added that he was overwhelmed to see a team of volunteer drivers turn out – despite the treacherous road conditions.
They spent three hours delivering the hampers.

There is still time for struggling families to get their hands on a hamper – with an extra couple having been packed ready to deliver on Christmas Eve.
