Power outage hits homes

Thousands of homes were without power after a late night fault

THIRTY thousand homes were without power after a substation fault cut electricity supplies.

People in Biggleswade, Sandy, Shefford, Arlesey and Langford were affected by the late night outages on Monday, as well as households in Hertfordshire.

The blackout began at 10.30pm and engineers gradually restored the connection, with all supplies working just before midnight.

A spokesman for EDF Energy Networks said: "We would like to apologise to several thousand customers in the Stevenage area who lost power supplies at 10.27pm on Monday night after a fault at a major substation.

"Areas affected included Biggleswade, Royston and Letchworth. Our engineers worked as quickly and as safely as possible to restore supplies."

Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service stated that the power loss covered both Shefford and Biggleswade fire stations.

But impact was minimal as emergency calls go to the control room at Kempston. The stations' power was quickly restored.

The only emergency call in the power affected area was an automatic fire alarm at The Copelands in Biggleswade and this was itself set off by the electricity outage.
