Windows smashed as vandals go on spree

Spate of attacks throughout town

Car owners in Biggleswade have been left dismayed after a spate of vandalism in the town last week.

It is thought that around ten cars had their windows smashed in one night, with attacks going on since mid-January.

Disabled Doreen Gerrard-Atkinson, who lives in a warden controlled bungalow on Holme Court, was distraught to find her car had been hit – with the window smashed by what looked to have been an air rifle shot.

She told the Chronicle: "I feel violated. Because I'm disabled my car is my lifeline. Apparently there has been a spate of them. What worries me even more is that I didn't hear it, it makes me feel even more unnerved. Being unwell makes you feel like that, so imagine if it was an older person."

Mrs Gerrard-Atkinson, 51, says she is frustrated that no one has taken responsibility for a broken fence that has turned the quiet cul-de-sac, which is home to many older people, into a cut-through to a new estate – saying she believes it has left them in a vulnerable position.

Another resident whose wife was targeted by the vandals said he had contacted police on numerous occasions – but was told they were unable to do anything unless the crooks were caught in the act.

He said: "I have reported to Bedfordshire Police five times that car windows have been smashed yards from our home, 14 windows so far since January 12 this year, that I have seen.

"My wife's car has been done and not only is there the expense of paying the insurance excess but it is more the worry about where to park and what's next."

A spokesman for Beds Police said investigations into the vandalism were ongoing.

She added that a CCTV camera was due to be installed in The Baulk, where a number of incidents have occurred in the past.
