A church will be spending £50,000 on modernising its entrances.

St Andrew’s Church in Biggleswade will fit a wider main door, new steps and ramp at its Chapter House entrance.

The project will see a set of oak-framed glass doors being installed at the north entrance of the Shortmead Street church.

The St Andrew’s Preservation Trust has agreed to pay 65 per cent of the required £50,000, but the church still needs to raise a further £17,500.

A working group set up by the church and led by Vaughan Johnson hopes to complete the fundraising within six months.

The group is also holding a gift day on Saturday, March 16 to raise funds for the project.

Priest-in-charge at St Andrew’s, the Reverend Guy Scott said: “For a number of years, St Andrew’s Church has been planning to modernise its entrances, while at the same time ensuring that everyone can access the church easily through the same door.”

The scheme – which has been approved by the Diocesan Advisory Committee and the Chancellor of the Diocese – will also see a versatile carpeted area being laid in front of the Trinity Altar and next to the main seating.

It will be suitable for young children to use during services but can easily be rearranged for worship, fellowship or study.

The gift day will see breakfasts being served at the church from 9am to 10.30am, and light lunches will be available from 11.30am to 1.30pm.

The coffee shop will be open from 10am to noon and there will be a cake stall, music, a craft demonstration and a grand raffle.

Anyone who would like to contribute to the appeal can collect a form from the church and send the completed version to Mr R Newman, 2, Holme Court Avenue, Biggleswade, SG18 8PF.
