BIGGLESWADE’S biggest retail boost for more than a generation has been given the go ahead.

London Road Retail Park will be given a complete overhaul – creating up to 450 new jobs.

Marks and Spencer will be the retail park’s anchor store while the existing tenants will be able to move into brand new premises.

All of the units will be replaced except that which houses Homebase, which will be refurbished.

Additional units will also be created.

London Road will be dualled from the A1 to the Saxon Drive roundabout to improve access to the site.

The planning application, which was submitted by LXB Retail, was unanimously approved by councillors at Central Beds Council’s development management committee meeting on Wednesday.

Councillors agreed that the current retail park is a tired “hotchpotch” of buildings.

The application has been approved subject to Section 106 agreements for the town, although a final decision must be first received from the secretary of state.
