Biggleswade may not be mourning loss of awning

A PUB may have to apply for planning permission if it does not remove a temporary awning from outside its premises.
Biggleswade Town Council will be writing to the New Inn and pub company Greene King to ask that the feature is removed from the alleyway outside the venue.
Members of the council’s off street car parking committee agreed to contact the firm at a meeting last Tuesday (February 14) following complaints about the Market Square pub.
Members of the committee confirmed that an enforcement officer from Central Bedfordshire Council has already contacted the pub about the awning, which is supposed to be put up only on a temporary basis.
The council will also be consulting Greene King and the Land Registry about whether the alleyway forms part of the pub’s premises or is public land.
Chairman Councillor Madeline Russell said: “We are all familiar with the issues surrounding the alleyway by The New Inn. It can be quite intimidating to walk down there, especially at night.”
Councillor David Lawrence added: “It wasn’t such a problem when there were just a couple of tables in the alleyway.
“But now there are more than that and it can make the alleyway difficult to pass through.”
A spokesman for Greene King said: “We have not received any complaints about the New Inn but if anyone does have any concerns we would welcome them to contact us directly.”
