Biggleswade roundabout is almost a reality

WORK could soon start on installing a new mini roundabout at a busy road junction.

Central Bedfordshire Council is planning to add the roundabout to the junction between Shortmead Street and Sun Street in Biggleswade.

The council is now waiting for Section 106 money to be paid by David Wilson Homes which is building 125 new houses in nearby Potton Road.

But at the moment 95 of the homes have been bought and the full number need to have been purchased before the money can be released.

Developers are often asked to contribute Section 106 money towards providing for the impact of their developments, such as on schools and roads.

At a meeting of Biggleswade Town Council’s off-street car parking committee on Tuesday (Febuary 14) councillors recognised the need to start work on the roundabout as soon as possible.

They agreed to write to Central Beds Council to ask if it could begin the work using its own funds on a loan basis until the Section 106 money is made available.

Guy Caswell, technical director for David Wilson South Midlands said: “The planning consent for our development requires us to undertake some traffic calming measures on nearby streets. We understand that part of this requirement includes a proposed traffic island between Sun Street and Shortmead Street.

“We have previously suggested that a financial contribution is made instead to help facilitate the process but as yet we have not had this offer accepted.

“Once we have received approval for the design, we are ready to start work on the traffic calming measures should we be instructed to do so, or arrange for a payment to be made subject to agreement.

“I look forward to working closely with the two councils.”

I believe there is a real need for a mini roundabout at this junction. Certainly turning right out of sun street is not easy because of the amount of traffic oming in both directions down shortmead Street. I hope too that it will slow down traffic as they go round the bend out of town. On the left there is a retirement complex for over 40 older people. Many of these residents have cars and are constantly having to pull out like a bat out of hell to avoid the speeding motorists as they come round the corner. Hopefully with the new roundabout in place, this should slow them down which in turn will make it easier and safer for drivers to pull out from the apartment complex.
