Blue Lagoon work to begin

Cliff to be partly demolished at Arlesey's danger beauty spot

A beauty spot branded a 'death pit' will have part of its cliff demolished after planning permission was granted.

Work is now set to go ahead at the Blue Lagoon in Arlesey where a section of the cliff, from which youngsters jump into the lake, will be reduced in height in a bid to prevent any more deaths.

Community safety manager at Mid Beds Rob Parsons said: "Reducing the height of the cliff will hopefully help to reduce the risk of injury to people.

"However the safest thing would be for people not to enter the site in the first place.

"It is, after all, private land and anyone using it without the owner's permission, is effectively trespassing."

The planning application was put together by Mid Beds District Council, North Herts and East Beds Sailing Club, Beds Police and the fire service, and was then submitted by landowner Tim Wilson.

Mr Parsons added: ""We would like to thank all involved in this work, particularly the Sailing Club who have given considerable amounts of their time and energies to this issue. Our thanks also go to Mr Wilson for his agreement to the proposals."
