CCTV to undergo review

Council hopes move will save cash

CCTV across Central Beds could be moved into one control room in a bid to save money.

Councillors are set to discuss the CCTV review at a Sustainable Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting next Tuesday (September 7).

In a report by Councillor David McVicar, portfolio holder for safer communities and healthier lifestyles at Central Beds Council, it has been recommended that the council pursue an option to see operations moved to Dunstable.

Previously the former South and Mid Bedfordshire District Councils operated separate CCTV systems from Hertfordshire and Dunstable.

It has now been proposed to integrate the cameras operating in the Hertfordshire CCTV Partnership into the Dunstable control room.

The move would save the council nearly 95,000 as a full year saving in 2011/12.

During the review the council considered several options including all services being provided through Stevenage Borough Council, and the CCTV service being outsourced to an alternative provider.

Local town councils were consulted in the review, and some were not happy with option two.

The report said: "Biggleswade, Sandy, Ampthill and Shefford Town Councils are satisfied with the service provided by the Hertfordshire CCTV Partnership (HCCTVP).

"These councils would have concerns if CBC transferred the monitoring of CBC's eight cameras from Stevenage to Dunstable.

"There is a view that this would make the commercial arrangement with HCCTVP unattractive."
