Chairman hits back at critics

A town council chairman has denied claims that the organisation’s meetings are poorly run and that minutes have been wrongly recorded.

Councillor Nick Daniels, chairman of Arlesey Town Council has rejected claims that the council’s minutes do not accurately reflect discussions and decisions made at meetings.

Former councillor Geoff Page and Sandra Sarll, who both live in the town have slammed the council over the accuracy of its minutes.

Mrs Sarll said minutes recorded from a council meeting state that a councillor voted for a planning application when he had told her that he actually abstained from the vote.

But Mr Daniels said: “Although members of the public are of course always welcome at meetings I think they can sometimes get confused when votes take place.

“Usually there will be a quick show of hands and as the public can only see the backs of some of the councillors it is easy to misread what has happened and how people have voted.”

Mr Daniels also refuted suggestions from Chris Gravett in last week’s Chronicle that the council’s meetings are chaotic and incompetently run.

He said: “I invited Chris to attend a meeting but at that one a councillor criticised the council from the public section. The criticism was quite strong and it meant the atmosphere was not the same as it usually is at our meetings.”

Readers have also spoken out in favour of town and parish councils after we asked if they are still relevant.

Stotfold Town Councillor Barrie Dack, who successfully campaigned for the setting up of the soon-to-be-established Fairfield Parish Council said: “They not only watch out for wrong-doings by the main authority but talk to and look after the needs of the people in the communities they serve.”
