Strings of lights, twinkling and shining in the streets above our shops is one of images that epitomise the festive season.

And each year our towns’ Christmas lights are switched on amid a flurry of merriment.

Potton’s Christmas lights will switched on in the market square on Friday (November 30). The music and carols start at 6pm. The lights will be turned on at 7pm.

Then on Saturday (December 1) the season of goodwill will begin in Shefford.

The High Street will be closed from 4.30pm to allow everyone to thoroughly enjoy the switch on event.

The lights will go on at 6pm. There will also be stalls and Henry Harris’ fun fair. The road will be reopened at 7.30pm.

Sandy’s Christmas lights switch on event will be on Sunday afternoon in the market square.

Father Christmas will arrive with Nexus band at 2pm. At 2.30pm the fancy dress competition and the wreath competition will be judged.

At the same time the entertainment on the stage will begin with school choirs, soloists and a ukulele group.

There will be carol singing with Churches Together at 4pm.

Then at 4.30pm it will the moment you have all been waiting for – the countdown to the lights switch on.

This will be followed by the drawing of the lottery tickets. The entertainment and the fun fair will continue.

The switch on event in Biggleswade will take place on Friday, December 7 in the market square.

Flicking the switch will be Natalie Soroko and Louis Clarke who are in the Bedford Pantomime Company’s production of Cinderella at Bedford Corn Exchange. The town will be awash with light at 7.30pm.
